For this week’s blog, I decided to make things a bit more personal.
A frequent question I get asked is, why did you set up your own practice?
The simple answer is, that I didn’t see cost effective care being provided in the community.
Another driving factor for starting up Jessica Leigh CBT was for people to feel comfortable. I left a well-paid counseling position to start up my own practice because counseling, for me, felt stiff and clinical. Jessica Leigh CBT was born of a vision of a living room type surrounding, that is comfortable, welcoming and a place clients would actually look forward to coming to each week.
I use personal touches, such as remembering how you like your tea or coffee or ensuring that I am at the front door to welcome you as part of the whole experience.
I am a firm believer that it is my job to make you feel comfortable. I understand that when we meet I am a stranger, which you are expected to open up to. Which is why I put such an emphasis on getting to know you as a person and ensuring that you feel welcome before we begin the session.
Referring back to the topic of cost-effective care in our community. A lot of people query why my costs are lower of that of other practices. This is not a reflection of my experience, but a reflection on my compassion towards clients who seek out mental health treatment, but have a low income. When I set up the practice, I vowed to work with ALL budgets, and this is something that I am still passionate about to present day. I have never turned away someone who needs help.
In closing, Jessica Leigh CBT is different to other practices because I view counseling differently. Counseling should be a safe place, in which you look forward to coming to each week. I ensure that you learn skills in session, which in turn teach you to become your own therapist. I do not drag sessions out, my first and foremost aim is a solution focused approach, as I am mindful of individual financial and time constraints.
